Van Mahotsav: Promoting Assam’s Plants

Out of the total 78,438 sq km of geographic area, the forest cover in Assam is around 35.83 sq km. The soil condition of the state support indigenous trees, which has medicinal properties, besides having a wide array of economic significance. Van Mahotsav, celebrated every year in the first week of July, aims at creating awareness on conservation of forests and plantation of trees among people. Introduced in 1950, this led to the plantation of millions of trees throughout the country. Forests, essential for our survival, also play a key role in water conservation.

With so many rivers originating from Madhya Pradesh and being a state, which is home to 9 national parks, 6 tiger reserves and 25 wildlife sanctuaries, it is our responsibility to conserve our rich environment.

In yet another landmark intervention CSIR- National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has bestowed upon the nation, it’s first Pristine air-quality monitoring station at the Institute of Himalayan Bioresource (IHBT) at Palampur( Himachal Pradesh). A unique, first-of-it’s kind atmospheric monitoring station in the campus of IHBT, has been established by NPL at an altitude of 1391 m for generating the base data for atmospheric trace species and properties to serve as reference for comparison of polluted atmosphere in India.

All of us dream of Green and Pollution free India. The wish has got the support of our government now that MyGov site MyGov.nic.in has the ‘Green India’ group. Since its launch barely a week back the group has seen more than 48,000 members. The members hold discussion on two topics – Through sound and innovative policies, how can we achieve both development and a clean environment? Can only Government mitigate the menace of climate change or is public participation the way ahead?
