The population of Chandigarh Urban Complex (CUC) comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has been growing fast at a rate of over 5% per year in the last decade. There has been a phenomenal growth in the population of vehicles as well especially the two and four wheelers in this period and their rising use due to rising household incomes. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides nearby towns are also growing fast and have large traffic interaction with the Chandigarh. In the absence of adequate and quality mass transport system, people are using the personalized modes which is not only leading to congestion on road network but also increasing environmental pollution.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the Governments of Haryana and Punjab, and Chandigarh Administration for the formation of Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) on Thursday for developing a comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuting system for the Union Territory and surrounding areas in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Also the administration has been working to develop cycling tracks all over the city.

However the citizen participation is very much required to frame a integrated and detailed urban mobility plan for “City Beautiful”. So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Urban Solutions” could be achieved.

Encourage citizens to use cycle at least once a week to go to their office. Senior police officers should take a lead so that others follow them. Make special traffic arrangements to ensure cyclists are not put to any inconvenience or they don't become safety problem on the road. Chandigarh Sr citizens hv also been organizing cycle rally and walk for health in association with Chandigarh police. Such rallies need to given wide coverage to make citizens come out of their comfort zone.

TRAFFIC WORS Our Administration should come up with ideas to tackle the congestion caused by smaller vehicles like Rickshaws and Autos, in which there has been a steep increase over last 1-2 years. They not only congest the important roads but are driven carelessly. These can be restricted in numbers and to limited routes. Moreover autos with out state registration should not be allowed. We have the best buses in the city which definitely make up for the reductions in these.

Re- carpeting of main roads should be done only in the night between 10pm to 6am. This is being practiced all over the world. Men at work should be properly attired and diversion signals should be put to make the driver on road attentive. System & plan for cables ducting should be in place. Since most of the main roads in Chd are straight,at few signals digital graphic display can be put along with traffic lights for benefit of car commuters to avoid traffic congestions ahead & take a diversion.

I think the reason there has been delay of Metro it because gov. wants to run it a same high speed. whereas for locations like Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula you actually need lesser speed metro or better called as a TRAM. This will just fit perfectly to the location and suit the beautiful environment.

Few suggestion to ease traffic situation 1) All road repair & cleanliness work only during night between 10pm-7am 2) Making ducts in road for cables, so that day time cable related work can be done without digging roads during peak traffic time. 3) Heavy carriage vehicles movement in night only 9pm-7am 4) Request to change work timings like - Bank 8am-4pm, Govt. 9am-5pm, private 10am-6pm, shops 11am onwards 5) Signal less roads, One ways, flyover as much as possible for ease driving.
