The population of Chandigarh Urban Complex (CUC) comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula has been growing fast at a rate of over 5% per year in the last decade. There has been a phenomenal growth in the population of vehicles as well especially the two and four wheelers in this period and their rising use due to rising household incomes. Chandigarh has the highest per capita income in the country. Besides nearby towns are also growing fast and have large traffic interaction with the Chandigarh. In the absence of adequate and quality mass transport system, people are using the personalized modes which is not only leading to congestion on road network but also increasing environmental pollution.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among the Governments of Haryana and Punjab, and Chandigarh Administration for the formation of Greater Chandigarh Transport Corporation (GCTC) on Thursday for developing a comprehensive integrated multi-modal urban and suburban commuting system for the Union Territory and surrounding areas in the states of Haryana and Punjab. Also the administration has been working to develop cycling tracks all over the city.

However the citizen participation is very much required to frame a integrated and detailed urban mobility plan for “City Beautiful”. So, the Chandigarh Administration hereby invites ideas, views, opinion and suggestions from the residents so that the objective of “Smart Urban Solutions” could be achieved.

Chandigarh traffic police must challan all learner license holders coming to traffic park or sec-17 to give test without permanent license holder by their side. One permanent license should be taken for one learner license holder for two wheeler or two learner license holders for four wheeler provided both of them give test in the same car. This will plug the loop hole and will send a right signal to the parents. Police must take some undertaking from permanent lic holder.

Chandigarh traffic police along with volunteers must constantly educate cyclists and rickshaw pullers to use cycle tracks. Traffic police must everyday must do cycle riding on the cycle tracks to understand various problems of the cycle track and suggest to make changes for ease of the cyclists.

Since long I am observing that two wheelers is the main causes of accidents on the indian roads due to not using the rear view mirror. Companies have provided the two rear view mirrors but motorcyclist/scooterist have remove the rear view mirrors provided with the vehicle. I my opinion if we make it compulsary for the two wheelers then accident percentage should decrease drastically.

My Suggestion for Traffic Control – The any vehicle bearing last digit of number of that date i.e. today 8 Sep. Means vehicle bearing last digit of number is 8 should not be on the road. In this way 10% congestion will be reduced automatically.

Right turn closure will be a great step to avoid congestion and accidents. unwanted rush at light points of sec 22-23 and divider of 17-22 will help citizens of chd to have unstoppable flow and reduce time to office goers. mostly cycle rickshawa and autos are creating jam at these two points. we have a positive flow of traffic at both roads, seamless and speedy. Only affected parties were auto walas , who park their vehicle opposite sec 17 bus stand ( at no parking place) to get customers .

Also we can use CNG fuel for local buses which results in less pollution. Also as Chandigarh contains a few over bridges and tunnels we can use some number of double decker buses which help in carrying more number of passangers and also it attracts more commuters.

The proper laning idea will increase the speed of buses and other traffic which again results in less congestion and good public transport for people. In these bus lanes driver should not allow to overtake other buses and make stopage only at bus stops. Administration should also develop an app for travel routes of buses .

Giving proper lanes doesn't means making corridors it will again increase traffic. So this should be done by just marking of bus lanes on road with white lines properly and writing bus lanes on it so that people should know about them. Administration imply it strictly to the bus drivers to only follow these lanes. Drivers can only use first lanes in case of turning right on roads. This idea will reduce traffic on first lane which will result in free flow of traffic in these lanes.
