Greenfield – OBD:
The Corporation has 654 acres in Vellalore in the southern outskirts. The compost yard is located here in about 250 acres and the integrated bus terminal will also come up here in 67 acres. With ample space for expansion, Vellalore will be the next development hub of Coimbatore. It can be developed as an ‘Outlying Business District’ with the transit hub as the focal point. This will be a model town with different sectors and has to be planned as a green township.

Redevelopment – CBD:
Coimbatore is blessed with the presence of 167.76 acres of prime land in the heart of the city in the jail premises. A well laid out ‘Central Business District’ can be planned here by shifting the jail and this can incorporate all Smart city principles. The plan should be for 70% open space and 30% built up area strictly adhering to green building design. This can give a great image for the city and can become even a financial and business hub.

I think for any smart city energy is a big concern.Since now a lot of new buildings would come up, I feel most of those buildings should have solar panels installed to make the city energy sufficient or maybe even surplus. Moreover Led bulbs could be used.

A single common portal can be created where the plans for road laying and digging is updated. Anyone who can dig road (Telecom, sewage, water board) and any one who can lay a road have to register here and update the plans on digging/laying.
This way the problem of digging up a road immediately after laying it can be avoided and even better, when laying roads, if the contractor knows that a water line is going to come there in another 6 months, he can provide some provisions for it.

The future is automation and digitization. The current strenghths as a mechanical innovation and manufaturing hub shall be improved by focusing on digitisation and automation.
We are looking at existing machining, fabrication, foundry units adding design and manufaturing capabilites for electronics and software to make products that are further automated and intelligent.

Bus stops should have an information board showing city map, bus stop location, list of bus numbers stop & pass thru that bus stop, route map and a QR scan image when scanned thru smart phone should provide near by locality information (such as hospitals, schools, temples, restaurants, attractions, parks, etc). A bus bay should be made mandatory for all bus stops. This will reduce road congestion and allow thru traffic flow smoothly.

Roads are laid for certain life time, but the digging begins within days after newly laid. A system should be in a place to hold the digging party accountable & responsible to return the road section back in original shape. Road digging without a proper permission should be made illegal.
