Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has been selected through a competitive process for SMART City Mission initiative of Government of India. In the next phase, Coimbatore city has to compete with 98 other cities from across the country to make it into the Top 20 cities which will be taken up for the first round of funding, for the financial year 2015-16.

Citizens and stakeholders of Coimbatore are requested to post their views and suggestions on how to make Coimbatore a Smart one. The citizens may organize their thoughts on the following topics

1. What should be the Vision of the Coimbatore
2. Strengths, areas of improvement & solutions across the following sectors

a. City Spatial Structure, Transportation and Green Spaces
b. Energy, Water, Waste Water and Environment
c. Housing, Health, Education, Security, Law and Order
d. Citizen Engagement, Smart Solutions and IT-led service delivery

d. Better road signs and direction boards on all roads. e. All Level crossings should be replaced with flyovers. f. Every Road’s protocol : Left side of road should have dedicated provision (concrete) for cables. : Right side of road should have dedicated provision Water pipes. : Center of the road for Underground drainage system. g. Coimbatore Mono rail option and additional EMUs. h. Go Green (CNG, Battery) Buses, Mine Buses.

c. Roads Boarding Plan (80 – 100 feet) for alternative connectivity apart from routine major roads i. Madukarai Kovaipudur Junction – Kovaipudur – Perur - Vadavalli ii. Madukarai Kovaipudur Junction - Sundarapuram - Podanur – Nanjudapuram – Ramanathanpuram iii. Thadagam Road iv. Thudiyalur – Saranavampatti – Kallapatti – Coimbatore Medical College – Singanallur v. Singanallur - Vellalore – Podanur – Echanari vi. Vadavalli - Edayarpalayam - Koundampalam – Ganapathy

Solution: Infrastructure : a. City Planning commission should a made supreme body for the city: i. Which should have control on overall city developments (Town planning, City roads, Traffic Management, Drainage, Sewage, etc.) ii. Should have a foresee at least 5 to 10 years ahead for the city. b. Identify roads for to make broad inner ring and outer ring roads connecting 4 directions of the city.

Coimbatore city pain areas needs to be addressed first 1. Infrastructure: a. Frequent digging for cabling and water pipes disturbs existing good laid roads. b. Cramped roads c. Absence of alternative good connectivity roads d. Parking issue e. Too many Rail level crossings 2. Drainage, Sewage and Waste Management: a. Water clogging in city major areas is a big concern. b. Noyal is more of drainage stream rather than a river. c. Dry and Wet Waste Disposal

Make water features like small lakes, rivers, ponds more cleaner. Help stop dumping wastes into these natural beauties and make way for a more cleaner & greener Coimbatore.

Solid waste management Roads needs to be laid throughout the city and should last long Skywalks, Bridges to improve the faster transportation Solar usage in all possible areas Improved parking facilities

Integrated health management including herbal, yoga, ayurveda, siddha and allopathy should be strengthened.Corporation and government schools and colleges should be improved.people who put their wards in private colleges due to facilities.same should be provided in government schools to facilitate more entry.

Solid waste management Improved Collection & transportation of waste Regular & timely collection at door step Increase recycle/reuse Scientific disposal of solid waste Penalty of littering and spitting Transport and Mobility Improvement in traffic discipline Better parking facilities Encroachment free pathways Integrated mass transport, mobility, and connectivity Better road network & Connectivity Development and widening of roads

Roads should be widened with Street Lights thinking smart to glow only if necessary. Even the power for the Street lights can be obtained from the Vehicles on the move along the way. Proper widened Drainage system with sensors to know the inflow and stagnation. Smart Cameras on road to know the thickness of traffic and should be updated to cloud storage. Hence Critical path traffic maps are generated on the go. Complete Map of the City to regulate agricultural land usage.

To develop Coimbatore as SMART city S – Self discipline to be improved – Laws should be enforced initially for some period M – Mass transportation & Required Road infrastructure to be in place A – Animal slaughter shop: to be improved R – Road side eatery shop must have alternative solution T – Treatment plants for waste water to come in live IF WE WON’T HAVE DISCIPLINE, THEN SPEND AMOUNT WOULD LIKE THROWN IN RIVER WATER
