The role of institutions of higher education in societal development is becoming increasing significant. In recent years, higher education has isolated itself from the society and there is a need to re-establish and strengthen higher education’s close linkages with the society. How can Universities foster social responsibility and engage in community outreach programmes. Sharing some working examples would also be a useful input.

The existing reservation policy for govt. jobs on basis of religion, caste & other considerations need to be revised. The govt. may promote completely free education & training for the deprived classes in order to equip them compete with others instead of conducting special recruitments and reservation in public sector jobs. The eligibility criterion for every post need not be diluted and the selection should be purely on the basis of merit like in the case of armed forces.

A common syllabus for all schools, instead of Central, State Syllabus. Teach three languages(English, Hindi and Regional language) from 1st standard on-wards. 1-4 use Regional language as medium, 5-8 use Hindi as medium and 9-12 use English as medium. The Syllabus should frame to evaluate qualitatively instead of quantitatively by using live project tasks

there should be a portal/web which can bind social workers/ NGOs to the university or school students so that the students can also know and think about social welfare related projects . Also the ideas should be promoted by college through gov supervision.

Students can be made to take up community projects that help them interact with others in society. Such projects can be structured by teachers who have been trained by social scientists. Training will help create projects with specific goals and learning in mind for students. Successful implementation of one project each year may help creating social awareness and empathy - making them responsible, responsive and empowered generation.
