In the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016, India sent its largest ever Olympic contingent comprising of 118 athletes. Despite the large number of athletes, the Indian contingent managed to bag only 2 medals in the Games viz., one Silver medal in Badminton and one Bronze medal in Wrestling. Considering the size of our country it can be said that the present performance was not up to the country’s potential. Views/suggestions are invited on what specific steps need to be taken to realise full sporting potential of India in forthcoming Olympics in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

Sports should be a part of acadamics, so that every child will be associated with sports. Sports schools should come up in our country so that one can build his/her career in sports. Ministry should conduct competitions at village, mandal and district levels. This can bring unknown talent into the limelight. Like football club format in europian nations, biennial national leagues among the states can sustain the spirt in athletes and brings revenue to sports ministry.

Like the defence personnel are selected and are trained along with education and finacial aid, on similar lines expert panels can be formed to select sport talents across the country, provide them with rigorous training, finacial aid and education.

I THINK THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE SPORTS CULTURE IN OUR COUNTRY IS THROUGH INTEGRATION OF SPORTS ACTIVITIES WITH EDUCATION, THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED BY PROMOTING SPORTS MAINLY AT SCHOOL LEVEL AND CONDUCTING MORE INTER-SCHOOL COMPETITION BY SPORTS AUTHORITY AND SELECTING THE STUDENTS FOR FURTHER ADVANCED TRAINING. JAMAICAN MODEL FOR ATHLETICS COULD BE FOLLOWED FOR THIS PURPOSE.

Changing the socialisation practices is must to bring long term impact. Change the expectations towards the sport , present it as a lucrative career.see that there is enough competetion at each stage.

5. Abolishing existing associations and appointing professionals for each sports to sort opinions from people who have played sports day in day out. 6. Allocate more funds to the sports quota. 7. Encourage corporates to fund the particular sports. 8. Better facilities for sportsperson. 9. Transparent selection process. 10. Involving all the current players to take their view to understand the what all is lacking in terms of Infrastructure, preparedness, coaches, physio, nutrition etc.

1. Development of Infrastructure at grass root level. 2. Add sports in school curriculum as separate subject for the students who wish to take it and compensate them accordingly wrt marks. There should be sports period each day in time table not one off sports period in a week. 3.Nationwide sports meet should be held every year at each levels(U-9, U-11,.....) 4.Promising talents should be picked early and groomed. It will help to create large pool of talent and therefore making it competitive

School curriculum and infrastructure - I suggest joining hands with big boards like cbse, icse and state boards and dilute academic courses and exams for these sporting talents. It is a big headache for children and parents. Secondly, may I suggest developing shared infrastructure for multiple schools as they are very expensive for each school to afford, and also it leaves out poor schools from access to good sports.

App for storing game's scores, details of athletes, coaches, investors - a platform for coaches, athletes and investors all at one place. Coaches can register games, scores and how well each athlete performed. This will help us find if any child is doing exceptionally well as per international standards. This data will also help us find and bridge gaps in training and infrastructure at young age. Note - I have developed such an app , I can share it for free.

Scouting - I believe scouting talent is single most important thing in field of sports. Just like music and arts, few kids have exceptional talents visible at young age but our poor scouting infrastructure / processes leave them lost in the muddle. I suggest to extensively scout talent across India including remote regions and not just towns and cities. This will spot exceptional talent at its prime from where your current training programs can take over.
