In the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016, India sent its largest ever Olympic contingent comprising of 118 athletes. Despite the large number of athletes, the Indian contingent managed to bag only 2 medals in the Games viz., one Silver medal in Badminton and one Bronze medal in Wrestling. Considering the size of our country it can be said that the present performance was not up to the country’s potential. Views/suggestions are invited on what specific steps need to be taken to realise full sporting potential of India in forthcoming Olympics in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

Cricket has been so popularised by electronic media that it has eclipsed all other sports.Youngsters are not opting for other games. There is no nursery for other sports. Where from sports persons will come.Focus on other sports. Open sports schools/academies in districts to promote other sports.

Cleanse apex sports bodies of old aged politicians. There must be some age limit and tenure for the office bearers.Preferably outstanding sportsmen/women should head sports bodies, rather than politicians. Some time back there was an election for president of Indian Hockey. Unfortunately,Mr Pargat Singh, an outstanding olympian was defeated by 80 years old Ms Vidya Stokes,a politician from H.P.by shear political lobbying.Misfortune for Indian hockey.

One of the reasons that the medal tally isn't increasing is that many people are scared of failure. If they couldn't make to the Olympics, their life would be ruined. They wouldn't get jobs. This may be a reason why one doesn't take up sports. The government must encourage people and also must ensure them a good life even if the have failed. This would give a lot of encouragement to people.

There are considerable efforts being made to increase the medal tally. But isn't sufficient. It all starts from the schools. The teachers teach students that books and marks are their life and fail to understand the student. They must instead bring out the hidden talent of the student and encourage him. This will surely help.

India has huge talent but the thing is we haven't explored or known it yet.Even today the youth of rural areas have not got the opportunities to show their talent their relation from the outside world is just cut of so bringing the talent from rural areas as well as with providing the youth who are with a unbeatable training can improve India's performance at the Olympics in my view.
