In the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016, India sent its largest ever Olympic contingent comprising of 118 athletes. Despite the large number of athletes, the Indian contingent managed to bag only 2 medals in the Games viz., one Silver medal in Badminton and one Bronze medal in Wrestling. Considering the size of our country it can be said that the present performance was not up to the country’s potential. Views/suggestions are invited on what specific steps need to be taken to realise full sporting potential of India in forthcoming Olympics in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

First of all we have to make a challenging, and competitive environment for the Athletes and as they can be from any where Following Points can be kept in Mind 1) Choosing residential Schools with facilities and Infrastructure as Training centers/Competition centers 2)Organizing District Level Competition to choose good athletes 3) Stop looking only Govt Services(ARMY,Railways,Etc) only as potential supplier of Athletes 4)Sport KIT Library establishment 5)Referral initiative

Thirdly we can introduce a unique schem for getting sponsors for events . We may ask different Corporates to “Own” an event. That is keeping in mind next Olympics An Event Say “Table Tennis” or say “Cycling-20 km” etc is owned by a company and they will provide financial, technical and coaching support to the players in addition to what the govt of india provides. In this way a healthy environment will be created for the promotion of sports assisted by the Companies .

For Stamina, Endurance and powerbased events the players need to be picked up from young age. The Athletes at least who compete in the World class events are naturally gifted to an extent. We can introduce schemes like this such as if anybody of the age of say 12 ,15 or any intended no say can run 100m, 200m or say 800m or can swim x metres in such and such time is any point of time open to govt. sponsored training, facilities and entitlements. The govt will then groom them and can carve Olympic

Two types of Sports in Olympics: Skill Based and Stamina Based. India can improve drastically in skill based competions such as TT, badminton, Archery, Shooting, etc simply by making the sportsperson competing with higher level players (playing with beet players improves gam automatically. so first target in bringing top notch players from thru out the world and make them play with the indian players. Ofcourse other things such as promotion giving them facilities etc are also very important
