In the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016, India sent its largest ever Olympic contingent comprising of 118 athletes. Despite the large number of athletes, the Indian contingent managed to bag only 2 medals in the Games viz., one Silver medal in Badminton and one Bronze medal in Wrestling. Considering the size of our country it can be said that the present performance was not up to the country’s potential. Views/suggestions are invited on what specific steps need to be taken to realise full sporting potential of India in forthcoming Olympics in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

People should know that there are games and atheletics other than cricket and soccer. They should be very confident that their life will be secure if they take these sports as their career. Promotion should given to, starting from the primary school students. Its not just for getting medals in olympics, if we promote all kinds of Sports in all schools over the country strictly, our future genration will be healthier and India will be at the top of the olympic medal list.

I think most of the sportsperson's career starts from childhood. Many of them have such schools which take part in inter-school competitions and such other sporting activities. But there are many schools in which these activities are not conducted. Activities such as regular sports events in the school. Plus building team to send for other inter-school competition. This is just one of the many aspects for helping build various sports in our country from grassroots level.

I had shared this earlier with the Sports Minister.. excellent info. on how Team GB went about winning more medals. Having lived in India, UK and US.. I clearly see lack of infrastructure a major issue. And infrastructure like Pune National stadium is poorly maintained. http://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/37150155

I'm not sure how much this would help, but improvement in sports requires an overhaul of the sporting/merit system and getting proper training for coaches to begin with. Once coaches are trained and get proper sustainable salaries can they only pass on that training to the athletes. Athletes also need to have sustainable government support so they can commit to their sporting activities. This might require sporting authorities to partner with athlete management agencies to secure endorsements.

It is no wonder that countries doing good in other sectors are also doing good in sports showing that progress in Science, Technology, Finance etc. goes along with performance in sports. Improvement in in sports alone is difficult to achieve without making it a part of curriculum. As with anything it would require funding. However, given limited funding govt need to come up with a plan to engage former players at school level as well as develop infrastructure and loans to promote sports.

District level selection committee should be formed .whose work would be to find new and potential players .secondly this committee should not be under any political influence and to work in an unbiased manner .Third equal funds should be invested in the training of these players as given to as price .Their proper nutrition and fitness should be taken in care .

Considering the amount we give as prize money to the award / medal winners, we should be investing at least equal amount in their training before. The 'Babudom' has ruined our country in many ways and pathetic performance in sports is one great example. Spending on such things should be considered as investment and not unfruitful or unnecessary expenditure. It should never be treated as charity done to the sports people. We need to improve facilities as well as our mindset.

I propose that the Government should build world class sporting villages in all the four regions of our country. These sporting villages should be equipped with state of the art facilities for training with respect to all the Olympics Sports. They should recruit the best trainers, coaches, nutritionists, doctors, etc. These sporting villages should also include residential school and college so that young passionate students could shift for training and at the same time continue studies. #MoYAS

It is not good enough just to have subject at school level but a complete eco-system should be crated whereby a student will be able to earn respectable livelihood in future. It also requires political will. Sports and performing art departments need to be improved by appointing knowledgeable and sensible people and not just insensitive babus who expressly show their apathy. We have to do something about political interference. Coaches and teachers and gurus are not well respected.
