India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

This is the exact image of the products being used. But no one cares only because of the lack of proper system to use that residuals... Only and simple way is to establish a base to carry them to a place where we can use it .. BELIEVE ME THESE ARE MORE USEFUL THAN THE STUFF FOR WHICH WE THROW THEM......

Promote Dehydration. Its known that fruits, vegetables retains their contents and freshness on proper dehydration. This makes the products to be used for long term. Government should install & promote starting up of new dehydration plants, specially solar energy based in which government-purchased vegetables and fruits must be dehydrated and further preserved in warehouses for timely supply & use. The proper procurement will also help in managing timely supply chain management.

Villages should have small scale food processing units that can not only help reduce the supply chain losses but also increase employment. More over these food processing units can be joint ventures from small contributions by the village community members and hence all profits can yield dividends, making the villagers self sufficient. Profits can be used to invest further or improve the conditions of the villages. All this can happen if corruption is curbed.

Refrigerated warehouse networks will help farmers to keep their harvest for longer periods. In a particular place let us say one crop is popular then based on the avg. yield govt. can aid them to have these kind of warehouse it can be either by govt. or partnership with private players. An online platform to track demand & supply can also be created so that these warehouse can track & send the harvest based on the need across our country.

Promote local cooperative ventures. Let the problems be solved by local people by their own cooperative and creative ways. Let us find situation specific solutions. Not make a policy. Let it be participative and cooperative solution seeking way. Local initiative.
