India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Procurement at source required a good infrastructure to the village. It can be done by initiating and sharing by Govt. The cold storage and packaging should be at village (group of village around 20-25 km area) can have one. All packed vegetables and fruits should be send to city or export by refrigerator van. Village should be connected with the customer and govt. with internet facility having computer network which is arranged by gram Pradhan as facilitator. Audit yearly and big investment req

The excess FV remained should be well maintained under state of art food processing industry and this should cover 5 to 6 surrounding cities. Our main focus is to prevent FV from perishing so that farmers earns full amount. The transport vehicle carrying FV has to modernize moving far from conventional trucks and tempos means an inbuilt mobile food cooler should be brought in

First and foremost the farmers in village growing fruits and vegetables(FV) may not have suitable transport mode or the roads may not be all weather road, we have to first start improving it by PM gram sadak yojana. Secondly all the FV should be collected under one cold type storage or large central cooling room so that FV remains fresh and this infrastructure can be between 4 to 5 villages. Also the local vegetables should be immediately sent to urban surrounding cities on day to day basis.

If money and machines and technical guidance are available skilled technicians will be able to produce quality products.Marketing is a critical element. Many of the units fail due to inability to sell. Defence,Railways,Tel Communications are major buyers. An agency may assist to co-ordinate their requirements ,production and supply.Once the units get an entry to market they will find their avenues to sell as the unit visited by me.Please consider as it will create jobs

I visited a Small Industry manufacturing ancilliaries for Tanks etc. for Defence. They have been participating in tenders and successfully supplying for more than 20 years.Their turnover is about Rs 3.8 crores.Employing about 25 workers.Though ther is scope for expansion they want to restrict due to shortage of manpower . When I saw that unit I thought why not I suggest to Govt to start industrial parks and encourage young skilled technicians coming out of I.T.Is to start similar small units.

Encourage production and consumption of fruits/vegetables which can be grown locally easily. Minimum transport = affordable price, low pollution, more shelf life, maximum health benefit as it is more suitable for particular climate. Nature does not grow apple in Maharastra as it wants Maharastrians to eat more mango, chikoo etc. It's as simple as that. Any food if comes to our plate from farm in 2 hours gives maximum benefit.
