India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

I want to add here that apart from post - harvest losses we must also look into recycling of used fruits and vegetables,as it may play a major role in reducing green house emission.. here are some reasons behind my theory..

i'm an amateur to this but..i'd agree that logistics and storage are of prime importance as its a question of post harvest losses..there could be 2 approaches towards it..either 1. setting up many numbers to storage facilities across the nation to store and supply the goods as and when required, this is helpful as we lack infrastructures n sound logistics but the issue would be to get savvy management and well equipped facilities and still keep the control over the costing.

since fruits and vegetables come under perishables and india is mainly dependent on agriculture, the quick transport facility and low cost storage facility should be provided to the farmers.due to third party people (dalaaris) the market is facing many problems.farmer should bring the products thru govt quick transportation and must be able to sell them.this will be more beneficial both to the farmer and customers to buy. excessive production of fruits and vegetables may be exported.

1.Setting up of agriculture panels to predict national expected yearly consumption and produce. The excess needs to be ready to be exported for maximum output. 2. state and fci needs to take monopoly of the produce buying and meet the needs for the country and the export for national agro economy to grow.

Main reason for increased prices of fruits and vegetables is the cold chain industry and reefer godowns. Hoarding goes on in government funded freezer godowns .Storage facilities in private hands will only be misused to jack up prices of essential fruits and vegetables .Even the ubiquitous vegetable potato costs so much now .Lets close the godowns and concentrate on quick transport and supply to market and adequate payment to farmer .

fruits and vegetables are very quickly spoiled with whether , very speed supply to market is necessary , india is mainly depends upon agriculture , preservation facilities very little in india , cold storage homes also very low in india , cost of preservation is more in india, so there must be development of storage facilities , transport vehicles must have cooling facilities , farmers are selling their produce at very lower prices to mediators ,

The main reason for post Harvest losses is, rotting & pest infestation.. we can prevent it by improved supply-demand monitoring, cold storage and food processing..
