Wetlands have the potential to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide via photosynthesis, and flooded soils have low oxygen levels which decrease rates of decomposition to promote the retention of soil carbon.

Wetlands preserve water quality by removing nitrogen, phosphorus and pesticides from agricultural runoff. Chemicals and nutrients can enter a wetland through surface water and sediment, or through ground water. ... Nitrate-N is efficiently removed from wetland surface waters by aquatic plants.

Wetlands benefit farmers because they act as a natural filtration system, regulating water flow and eliminating chemicals from water. Purchasing property with wetlands is advantageous if you plan to use it for things such agriculture, conservation, its breathtaking views, fishing, and hunting.

You can build on wetlands as long as they're not jurisdictional, but that doesn't mean you won't be fighting an uphill battle. When wetlands are filled, the water that makes them wet has to go somewhere. If you're building on these lands, you have to consider that your home or business may be damaged by this water.

If all the wetlands dissappeared, animals (and humans) would have to start drinking water that wasn't as clean, and might be polluted or salty, which would make us sick. ... As well as losing a lot of drinking water, if all the wetlands disappeared, thousands of species of plants and animals would become extinct.

Wetlands typically have three general characteristics: soggy soils, water-loving plants and water. Scientists call these: hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation, and wetland hydrology.

We fill in wetlands to build houses and businesses. We drain wetlands for agriculture. We cut down trees for timber and charcoal. We use too much fertilizer and pesticides on our farms and gardens.

Wetlands play a critical role in maintaining many natural cycles and supporting a wide range of biodiversity. They purify and replenish our water, and provide the fish and rice that feed billions. They serve as a natural sponge against flooding and drought, protect our coastlines and help fight climate change
