India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

cities need to make it mandatory for quake proof and fire proof licenses before a plan gets passed.the residents need a fire security drill / an earthquake security drill atleast once a year. the preparedness of disaster management teams also needs to be checked every month.

the basic of DP is to get to know the kind of disaster and area where being executed. We should have a CHECK LIST ready (for almost all kind of known disasters)... #1: Local administration in contact including Police/ Administration/ Political etc.. #2: Vendor List/ NGOs - to provide items required in the area #3: Govt Agencies to provide resources/ machines/ equipments in time #4: Resource Management and Lead who could manage all these and be ready in advance with required items...

sir we need to put disaster management programme tutorial for each & every person of india mandatory.Even basic first Aid course to be included so that every person can perform the task in case of any disaster as it takes time for the government to take any action & provide assitance but if we train all persons it will be good for us only & people will stop blaming govt. for anything & blame culture to govt can be stopped.

India has to suffer from vagaries for nature due to the fact it has a huge geographical landmass. This coupled with the fact that we have a high population density results in high casualty and damage. In order to protect our people from disasters we have to make disaster resistant houses,More shelter homes,Better use of technology to predict disasters,Better communication facilities like allowing use of sat phones and conducting disaster awareness programs and regular intervals etc.
