India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

The people play a major role in every disaster. The Government, as the very first step, should focus on training people, in general, on how to deal with specific disasters. It may also inculcate special training to a select number of people in every regions, demarcated as it seems fit, to lead disaster rescue efforts in the region, as one among the people.

I am an NRI... On behalf of our local India Association we are trying to make Charitable Donation to the Prime Ministers National Relief Fund (PMNRF)... I find it sad that there is no provision with ANY Indian bank in US to make a deposit to this worthy cause (and also the National Defense Fund)... Why can't these funds establish Deposit accounts with some Indian bank branches abroad, like State Bank of India in NY, so we can make bank to bank ACH deposits without having to incur fgn remit fee

I think it will be better to add basic disaster management coarse as a compulsory subject (like physical education) in school, and collages and also held some yearly competition or exam to grow interest in it

rajiv shakyaver 1 sec ago I have an idea which will be very helpful in the survival of accident deaths in india or in world. We use air bag in car...if india develop such kind of air bag which we can carry as a ordinary bag. for example we are walking with wearing the such bag and car or something hit us..the bag expand with air and in this condition we donot hurt and the air bag save our life. It a simple idea but DRDO can develope such kind of bag. Please share the idea. Thank you >less...

Disaster management sites should be set up as a cluster managed by the state. This will ensure that we recoup with minimum loss of Data. For eg Crucial work being done in Pune should have a Disaster Site in say Hyderabad vice versa.
