Digital India Program: Digital India, a flagship program of the Government of India, aims to “transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy”, the focus is on being transformative to realise IT (Indian Talent) + IT (Information Technology) = IT (India Tomorrow). This program centres on three key vision areas of “Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen”, “Governance and Services on Demand” and “Digital Empowerment of Citizens”. This is an initiative of the Government of India to integrate the government departments and the people of India.
Digital India Program Launch: To formally launch the Digital India Program, it is envisaged that some of the key initiatives under the program will be launched on a weekly basis as mentioned below
i. Digital Locker: is a key initiative under the Digital India Program that aims to eliminate the use of physical documents and enables online sharing of verified e-documents across government agencies. Residents can upload their own electronic documents and digitally sign them using the e-sign facility. The benefits of Digital Locker is to provide Indian residents a personal account for Government e-documents on the cloud, to enable all resident related document to be e-signed and available digitally, to allow Government Departments to access resident documents & certificates issued by other Government agencies, thereby reducing administrative overhead, saving time and reducing effort and to ensure that all resident documents are available to him/her anywhere, anytime, in a standard format for sharing with authorized agencies. The Digital Locker system uses the Aadhaar biometric system to identify and authenticate citizens. To sign up for a Digital Locker, all you need is an Aadhaar number and a mobile phone that is linked to your Aadhaar Number. You can go to the site https://digitallocker.gov.in/ and use the sign up link to open your account.
ii. E-Prison: is a necessary platform required for on boarding for all the state prison departments in one place. This will be a common platform for centralised data about prisoners across the country and will give easy access to the common man for visiting their wards lodged inside the prison. It will help in providing various types of information about the inmates to the society in real time and essential information to inmates lodged inside the prisons. It will also assist in prison management by meeting various day to day information needs. It will lead to exchange of information with other stakeholders of the criminal justice system and provide information to various agencies for intelligence and investigation purpose.
iii. On the fly translation tools for websites: Under the National e-Governance plan project several Mission Mode Projects are initiated for providing services to the common man. Currently there are 31 Mission Mode projects encompassing Central and State and integrated ones. Several portals / sites are being designed, developed and deployed under each of the Mission Mode Projects. In order that the fruits of e-Governance reach the masses the services thus offered needs to be in ones mother tongue. India being a Multicultural, Multilingual country with 22 scheduled languages it becomes utmost crucial to provide the citizen services in the locality and in regional language. The www.localisation.gov.in portal is a one stop shop for relevant standards, best practices, tools and technologies for realizing the dream of localizing all the citizen services in regional languages. The portal is equipped with the above and provides assistance / information for undertaking localisation of MMPs.
iv. Digitize India Programme: is an end-to-end workflow based IT framework for digitization of Government records to deliver Citizen Services to the public and to generate employment for housewives and unemployed youths to facilitate work from home. The vision is to empower numerous self-identified volunteers, part-time workers, housewives, students and general public. This Programme will help in improving performance by providing efficient search and access to records, save costs by freeing the space used for storing and archiving Government records, will lead to effective Citizen Service Delivery for providing easier access to Government records, will lead to Increase in Government Revenue generation by providing data to business and citizen and help in strategic and informed analysis, planning and decision making based on historical data.

The Department of Electronics & IT invites entries from interested participants to suggest User Friendly Names for the above mentioned Key Initiatives/Projects. The need of the hour is to spread awareness about these initiatives under the Digital India Program, to engage different audience effectively, and help them understand how these projects will benefit the citizen and help him/her connect with Digital India. A small brief on each project is given below for better understanding. The suggested entries should be practicable, catchy and relevant to the project.
The last date for submission is 2nd June, 2015.
The winner will be awarded a Cash prize for each of the 4 categories:
1. First Prize: Rs. 10,000/-
2. Second Prize: Rs. 5,000/-
3. Third Prize: Rs.2,000/-
