Since ancient times, Bhārata, one of the world’s oldest continuously living civilisations, has evolved some of the most captivating games to keep individuals and communities creatively entertained. The rich traditions of Bhāratīya Khel consisting of hundreds of indoor and outdoor fun activities capture the geographical diversity of the different regions and incorporate features of their nature-scapes, their philosophy, culture and the mindset of their people. The standardisation of selected games in the education system has resulted in the forgetting of some of the simpler ones that were played by our ancestors that helped them learn how to be swift, strategize and outsmart opponents skilfully in the game on the ground as well as in life. Through this initiative, we seek to bring simple and easy-to-play games to every household in the country through the education system with the support of Physical Education Teachers as well as through different organisations that encourage and promote games as part of their activities.
To start with, we have introduced six Bhāratīya Khel (every alternate month) in the first phase, in one year starting in the first week of November 2023. Be part of this movement to bring back the joy of playing them and popularising them, we invite you to do the following:
