Handloom products constitute an integral part of the India’s heritage and culture. Showcasing various vibrant aspects of the cultural heritage of India, the handloom sector provides employment, directly and indirectly to over 43 lakh handloom weavers, belonging to socially and economically weaker sections of the society particularly in the rural areas.

Varanasi has a rich cultural heritage and Banaras silk sarees and crafts are an integral part of the Indian landscape. Varanasi handloom makes India proud of its heritage. The handloom and handicraft products of Varanasi have got wide recognition all over the country and abroad for their highly artistic design, colour combination, superior craftsmanship and long durability.

Keeping in view the vision of making the handloom and handicraft industry of Varanasi and neighbouring areas, market oriented and for generating productive employment, the Government of India is setting up of a Trade Facilitation Centre and a Crafts Museum to develop and promote the handlooms, handicrafts and silk products of Varanasi and to provide necessary help to weavers, artisans and entrepreneurs of Varanasi for boosting their marketing activities in domestic as well as international markets and carry forward the rich tradition of handlooms at Varanasi.Hon’ble Prime Minister of India laid foundation stone of Trade Facilitation Centre and a Crafts Museum on 7th November 2014 at BadaLalpur, Varanasi.

Your valuable views and opinion is sought on the concept and facilities/services to be provided in the Trade Facilitation Centre and the Crafts Museum at Varanasi.

For the convenience of weavers and craftsmen an efficient banking, courier services and transportation companies in Bhadohi will have to be developed. The weavers of Bhadohi (or as such any other handloom small town of Maharashtra, Andhra, Bengal etc) do not have any access to facilities like ATM machines, efficient banking from some international standard bank etc.

Business cannot grow in a city unless there is proper trabsportation system. I am aware that a Metro Rail is being planned for Varanasi, just like the one in Delhi. However, I don't think a Metro Train is the right solution. Instead, I think a congested city like Varanasi should get Mono Rail which is comparatively cheaper and more feasible in small towns. Places like BHU, Varanasi Station, Godauliya and sankat Mochan can be directly linked with Mono Rail.

Trade facilitation can also be done through annual international exhibition in Varanasi--- can we learn a lesson from International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. On similar lines Varanasi can organise an International Handloom Trade Fair. This exhibition, lasting about one-month, will soon become favourite of all domestic and international tourists. All such people looking for wedding sarees will throng to Vns which will benefit the weavers.

1)Proper Implementation of already introduced schemes such as 'WEAVER'S CREDIT CARD which can reach each and every needy people so that weavers can be empowered. Reduction of product taxes can be useful in making craftsmen and weavers directly beneficial as part of financial incentives provided by government. 2) Modernizing the Textile Design department in BHU with latest equipment to conduct more research into the TCAD/CAM and 3D software technology to benefit the Trade centre activities.
