Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has been selected through a competitive process for SMART City Mission initiative of Government of India. In the next phase, Coimbatore city has to compete with 98 other cities from across the country to make it into the Top 20 cities which will be taken up for the first round of funding, for the financial year 2015-16.

Citizens and stakeholders of Coimbatore are requested to post their views and suggestions on how to make Coimbatore a Smart one. The citizens may organize their thoughts on the following topics

1. What should be the Vision of the Coimbatore
2. Strengths, areas of improvement & solutions across the following sectors

a. City Spatial Structure, Transportation and Green Spaces
b. Energy, Water, Waste Water and Environment
c. Housing, Health, Education, Security, Law and Order
d. Citizen Engagement, Smart Solutions and IT-led service delivery

The city should assess its energy requirements and plan two major projects, one wind based and one solar based in the outskirts to generate at least 50 – 60% of its power requirements through these renewable sources. Other initiatives already undertaken like bio methanation can also be welcomed.

The LED streetlights should cover all over the city replacing conventional lighting. The city is witnessing shifting of overhead electric lines to underground and this will increase the visibility in urban aesthetics

The education, healthcare institutions and industries of the city shall install their own micro level waste management systems

Projects on waste to energy and waste to power shall be planned and the micro level models practiced by Kurundapalayam and Odanthurai panchayats in the district can be replicated.

The zero waste project and adoption of wards by NGOs and corporate houses is a model initiative and should be spread to all 100 wards.

The city has invested heavily in waste management, underground and sewage treatment from JNNURM fund and there should be a continuation and proper follow up in upcoming projects. The projects should all be completed and coordinated from collection to disposal of waste.

Water: a) The corporation chould implement 24 x 7 water supply scheme as early as possible. b) There should be smart metering facilities for water supply. c) The drinking water quality should adhere to UNEP or WHO standards.

In order to control the clamour created by the pedestrians while crossing roads in main areas like gandhipuram, cross cut road, db road,avinashi road etc.. Subways or over brideges can be made for ease.

basic needs to make coimbatore smart: 1. proper maintenance of traffic signals and street lamps in all zones of coimbatore. 2. proper disposal of waste and ensuring garbage is never strewn on roads and canals. 3. ensuring sand is never accumulated on roads and beside center medians to ensure the safety of motorists and to make roads look neat. 4. stringent rules against public disturbances and strict fines on ublic smoking, drinking and dirtying of public spaces. 5. making commercial hotspo
