The fashion industry represents a major and critical component of the Indian textile industry. Indian fashion designers have created a place for themselves in the International market by dint of their creativity and hard work. Dealing with the top segment of the textile industry, the fashion designers owe certain responsibility towards the traditional handloom weavers and handicraft artisans in the unorganised sector on the other end of the textile industry.

Handloom and handicraft products of our country form a part of our rich tradition and culture and provide livelihood to crores of people next to agriculture in the rural areas. Hon’ble Prime Minister has laid stress on linking the handloom and handicrafts with fashion industry for value addition and exploring new markets, which will increase the earnings of the weavers/artisans on a sustainable basis. Accordingly, Ministry of Textiles has taken up promotion of handloom and handicraft with fashion under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Hon’ble Prime Minister giving specific stress on “Zero defect and Zero effect”, “Skill, Scale, and Speed” for boosting up production, employment and export on a large scale for achieving the objective of making the growth participative and inclusive “Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas”.

As a part of this endeavour, efforts are being made for encouraging the handloom weavers and handicraft artisans for producing quality fabrics as per market demand. Steps are being taken to organise them into groups and provide required support for design development, training, looms, accessories, raw material etc., for weaving fabrics/making handicraft items with quality as per market demand. Common Facilities Centre with godown for storing raw material finished product office with internet facilities, rest room and training shed will be set up at a cost of about Rs. 50 lkahs for a group of weavers/artisans. The entrepreneurs dealing with fashion fabrics will be linked up with such groups for marketing including export. The Development Commissioner (Handlooms)/(Handicrafts) is taking necessary steps in this regard with the help of the Weavers’ Service Centres and concerned State Government. Further due attention is being given to social compliance like checking any incidence of child labour and environmental compliance like checking pollution of any kind for creating “Win-Win” situation and making the growth sustainable.

The entrepreneurs dealing with fashion fabrics are invited to send their choice and views.

The last date for submission of entries is 30th April, 2015.

There are numerous dyeing/weaving/embroidering techniques which fashion designers are not able to incorporate into their collections because those techniques are only used to make sarees, stoles, shawls, etc. It is not feasible for fashion designers to purchase sarees, stoles or shawls to construct their garments. Therefore, it would be great if dyers/weavers/embroiderers could also start manufacturing fabrics which fashion designers can purchase as per the fabric requirement of their garments.

It would be great if all the textile designers of India could help all the dyers, weavers & embroiderers to design textiles using modern & contemporary fabrics, colours, textures, motifs & designs so that more & more fashion designers can start making optimum use of Indian handcrafted fabrics to design their collections for films, fashion weeks, fashion stores, etc. Indian craftsmen need to change their traditional design sense & make an effort to reach out to young budding fashion designers.

It would be great if the government could launch fabric stores in prime locations of both the fashion capitals of India (Delhi & Mumbai). It would be awesome if the ministry of textiles could sell fabrics which have been dyed/woven/embroidered by all the national award winning dyers/weavers/embroiderers at their fabric stores so that all the fashion designers could do their fabric shopping at these stores in order to create their collections for films, fashion weeks, fashion stores, etc..

Indians must discard materialistic positivism to boycott'fabIndia'if they want to respect themselves. The Goa CM's support for'fabIndia'management & putting the blame on the ground level employees exposes the business-politician personal nexus in playing with the modesty of the women. Goa CM, Pl. have the courage & honesty to apply 'vicarious responsibility' to the 'fabIndia' management & do not victimise the ground level employees(when,Indian private sector is the epitome of feudalism).

I have noticed that the cheapest material, with high designs rule the roast. Hence through Youth mandate ,we can make the price of the finished goods cheaper and highly designed. Hand over this to the YOUTH and they will promote the same.Jai Modi-Raj

Indians must come out of materialistic positivism to boycott 'fabIndia' all the time. Now, the Goa CM's support for 'fabIndia' management and putting the blame on the ground level employees exposes the business - politician personal nexus. Goa CM, Pl. have the courage and honesty to apply 'vicarious responsibility' component of the legal provisions to the 'fabIndia' management and do not victimise the ground level employees (when, Indian private sector is the epitome of feudalism).
