Retire expensive and under-utilised coal plants that have been unable to run for a period of one year from the start of the real time electricity market. Demolish those that are unable to establish their financial viability even after two years and convert the locations to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for use by industry.

Establish real-time competitive markets for electricity and its suppliers as the sole method of selling and buying electricity in India. Mandate all generators to sell into and all buyers to buy from a national real-time electricity market supplanting existing contractual arrangements. Similarly, mandate all coal suppliers to sell into and all coal power plants to buy from a newly created national coal market supplanting existing fuel supply agreements.

While increasing revenue collection by raising electricity tariffs is a terrible idea, increasing efficiency and productivity might just help reduce the revenue shortfall without further hurting customers or slowing economic growth.

The policy must enforce use of new age equipment for deployment to conserve power across consumer segments.Investing in end of life equipment is a waste of resources when relevant tech is available, especially Govt expenditure.Rules must cover utilisation & accountability.CISCO Energywise & Schneider Electric are leading solution providers addressing climate change & power protocols.India needs to concious individual responsibility today in wake of current challenges, power is infrastructure.Time

Dear Sirs, National Electricity Policy should be only one and it must have binding to all States. This policy must include Solar energy which can provide cheaper electricity in villages. The production of electricity must have cost control by controlling Wastage. The distribution system in India is full of theft and losses. It must be controlled to maximum. Theft control should be state subject and financial penalty must be imposed to get the best results. JAI HIND J K Tiwari
