These standards apply to all stakeholders involved in the lifecycle of Assistive Technologies, including:
Manufacturers and developers
Service providers and vendors
Government agencies and procurement bodies
Research institutions and academic bodies
End users and disability advocacy organizations
To ensure all Assistive Technologies meet minimum accessibility requirements.
To promote universal design and inclusive innovation in the AT sector.
To safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities to access AT without discrimination.
To facilitate interoperability, usability, safety, and affordability in assistive products and services.
These draft standards are formulated to establish non-negotiable requirements for the design, development, procurement, distribution, and maintenance of Assistive Technologies (AT), ensuring equal access and inclusion for persons with disabilities. They align with the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act), which mandates the creation of barrier-free environments and the promotion of accessibility across all domains.
