The various factors that influence biodiversity include -temperature, altitude, precipitation, soils, and their relation with other species. For instance, ocean biodiversity is 25 times lesser than terrestrial diversity. Biodiversity also increases its form as it moves from the poles towards the tropics.

Low biodiversity is characteristic of an unhealthy or degraded environment. A mown lawn in a city park is an example of an ecosystem with low biodiversity. There will be two or three kinds of grasses, some dandelions, of course, and maybe a robin or some starlings poking about for worms or bugs.

The five classes are: bog, fen, marsh, swamp, and shallow water. Some wetlands accumulate peat (partially-decomposed organic matter) and are called peatlands. Bogs and fens are the dominant peatland classes in Alberta, although some swamps and marshes can also accumulate peat.
