Original Act (2006): The act defined MSMEs based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment.
Amendments (2018 and 2020): The definition was updated to include annual turnover as a criterion alongside investment. This change aims to better capture the growth of MSMEs and align with global practices. For example, micro enterprises now include those with annual turnover up to ₹5 crore, small enterprises up to ₹50 crore, and medium enterprises up to ₹250 crore.
Ease of Doing Business:
Amendments have introduced measures to simplify compliance requirements and improve ease of doing business for MSMEs. This includes measures to reduce regulatory burden and streamline procedures.
Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) Integration:
The amendments have aligned MSMED provisions with the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) to ensure smoother handling of MSME insolvencies. This integration aims to provide MSMEs with a more structured process for resolving financial distress.
