India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

TO PROMOTE SOCIAL HARMONY: To set up integration councils in every district of India comprising civil society and representatives of all religions. This group[ will meet twice a month and detail and discuss issues resulting in religious tensions before it can erupt. This will also allow the police and intelligence agencies to get a ground feel on issues before it explodes into violence.

I think If government appeals for monthly contribution for Disaster fund (APATKALIN GANGAJALI YOJANA). If government give assurance this money will be used only for that & on condition of all affairs reflects on site. I am sure lots of Young people join us & we can cut burden from our budget. I want to clear my idea - This Yojana Start from minimum Rs.100/-. If I give standing instruction to my Bank for this yojana bank will directly deduct money from my account & I'll receive mail.

Local units would play a very important role as they would act first and then inform the district level units. All school children should be given training for Disaster management. There should also be a scheme House wives and senior citizens to do such a training. This way local formal and informal teams can be constituted.

India's weather forecasting system still has many issues which are reducing forecasting accuracy. To make India disaster prepared, there is a need to bring awareness among the people regarding the severe weather and thus make India a "Weather-Ready Nation' in the near future. We have identified these issues & solutions to them have been proposed in November 2014 to the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences , India Meteorological Department and Hon'ble PM of India. Every time I see our beloved PM coming out of security cordon and mingling freely with general public, I feel a palpable security threat. Our security agencies should be more serious about the security of our PM and should not allow such things. Our PM is too precious to us and we cannot afford even a remote chance of harm to him. We need to have waterproof enclosures especially in election rallies and visit to open areas. Security agencies have to take such initiatives.

Every state has many reserve police battalions located in various parts of the states. They can be trained in disaster relief operations so that they can be quickly deployed during emergencies. This could enhance the preparedness and supplement the NDRF.
