India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

Continuing from my last post: Select and form a team of about 150, from the best of Home-guards, CRP, Fire fighters, Costal guards, Police force, IAS officers and trained them in USA/Japan/ Indonesia etc. for various disaster training. Once trained, spread them across the country to train others at state and district level. Fishermen are ideal during storm and heavy rainy days, utilize their skills and equipment during flooding situation. This will reduce burden on armed force. Jai Hind.

(continue) Formulate policies and procedures to combine efforts of social organizations and citizens with Federal and state disaster agencies. Policies should clearly define the role of social organizations and private citizens. This will avoid chaos and helps in utilizing resources properly. Educating people through media on survival tactics will help the relief efforts. Last but not the least, learn from the disaster and implement thoughtful countermeasures to prevent or lessen the damage.

Natural Disaster is unavoidable and can happen any time at any place. Preparedness, in terms of advance and vigilant weather system, effective coordination among govt. & other groups, availability of day to day life supplies including medicines_ proper equipment_ trained man power, is the key and only defense for the survival. Form federal disaster centers in each zones East, West, South & North along with Sate level center at the prone area with all items listed under "Preparedness" (cont)

...helmets in order to give them a better chance at avoiding possible life threatening injuries in case of an encounter. In case the equipment is already in place we need to revisit the quality of it being used. We cannot continue to lose good men to such cowardly acts by terrorists and have been living this disaster for the last 25 years. It is high time someone did something about it. Mr PM, I must reiterate, that the buck stops with you. It would be in the interest of the whole nation if...

Dear Mr. PM and Defense Minister, the martyrdom of a soldier is a disaster for the family of that solider and for the whole nation hence I post in this thread. The recent martyrdom of Colonel MN Rai and Constable Sanjeev Singh in a gun-battle with the terrorists in Tral, Kashmir begs to ask the question whether our defense forces are well equipped with life -saving gear at least in a conflict zone. I request you to please take necessary steps to equip our soldiers with bullet-proof vests and...

In the villages, for the announcement purpose the loud speakers could be provided to each and every street. & They should be connected with the announcement room. So that in times of disasters the announcement will be shared without time delay. There is one village JaminKulam in Kanyakumari district (TN)which provided loud speaker for each street, so any announcement regarding the provision of Aadhaar card or LPG cylinder..are announced quickly to the village people from the panchayat head room.
