Using machines to replace people in cleaning sewage is the first step. Secondly, let us scan the rolls of every municipality and corporation and find out how many of the scavengers and cleaners are from a certain caste of scavengers. We then need to first prevent members of this caste group from entering the same old field. We need to brainstorm on how to skill this community and absorb them in workforce elsewhere which will give them the social lift up they need.

Dear Sir, Manual scavenging can be tackled using latest technology by using robots to go inside manholes as is done in western countries, particularly Germany. The manual labourers can be trained to handle the robots and the waste can be transferred to trucks to be disposed off hygienically. Alternately, to eliminate the need for the labourers to get into the manhole and physically handlling human waste, the waste can be pumped into a tanker which can then be transferred to a suitable spot for disposal.Technology is available to do this.Of course, the people who handle waste should be given adequate protective gear to hanhdle the job.
